VIKING INLAID GAMING PIECE


8th-10th century AD. A lead cylinder-shaped weight with a panel of millefiori coloured glass embedded to the upper surface, perhaps a fragment of Anglo-Saxon or Scandinavian glass bead; multicoloured bead in blue-black, maroon-red and cream-white. Cf. Pollington, S. Mead Hall – Feasting in Anglo-Saxon England, Hockwold-cum-Wilton, 2003, p.136, 220. 19 grams, 19mm (3/4"). Found Lincolnshire, UK. This piece would have been used in the board-game hnefatafl.
