INDIA. Mughal Empire. Mohur, AH XXXX//Year 2 (Azar) (1628). Surat

INDIA. Mughal Empire. Mohur, AH XXXX//Year 2 (Azar) (1628). Surat Mint. Shah Jahan. NGC MS-63.
Fr-787; KM-255.6. An impressive Mohur, likely originating from the Akola Hoard discovered in 1974. The story traditionally attached to these pieces is that they were military payment sent to Mughal troops. The courier delivering these Mohurs took camp for the night in a dry riverbed, when suddenly he and his accompaniment, along with all the Mohurs were carried away by a torrential monsoon. While perhaps not entirely believable, this story does offer a bit of character to the issue. The present specimen is beautiful, with a soft luster and sharp details and only a trace amount of contact. A piece that deserves an elevated place in a premium collection of Indian coinage.

Estimate: $1500 - $2500
