Proof Franklin Half Dollars 1951 50C PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC

Proof Franklin Half Dollars
1951 50C PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC. Although 1951 Deep and Ultra Cameo proofs are seen more often and are of higher quality than the 1950 half dollar proofs, in Superb Gem grades the 1951 proofs remain an ultimate prize for Franklin half dollar collectors. Repolished proof dies started in 1951, increasing the number and quality of Cameo proofs when die surfaces were restored to their unworn state. Deep or Ultra Cameo proofs benefited and are seen more often, although Superb Gems remain the Franklin half series' greatest rarities.
This remarkable PR68 Ultra Cameo proof is one of only two such pieces shown on NGC's Census report. PCGS has not certified any 1951 PR68 Deep Cameos, reporting a pair of PR67+ Deep Cameos as its finest-certified examples. Microscopic die polish lines on the central motifs crisscross within the thick mint frost when this coin is viewed under high magnification. Existence of these polish lines offer clues to the coin's early die state and its resultant bold contrast against watery, deeply mirrored fields. A sharp strike adds to the impeccable surface quality, and the white-on-black contrast is simply remarkable. Census: 2 in 68 Ultra Cameo, 0 finer (6/23).
