A Chinese black lacquer cabinet on later stand, 19th century, the rectangular top with foliate engraved brass mounts over a pair of decorated cupboard doors depicting Oriental scenes enclosing an assortment of ten drawers raised on a later ebonised stand on square section legs with gilt C-scroll brackets 139 x 80 x 40.5cm Provenance: The Peckover family, formerly of Peckover House and Sibald's Holme, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire The decoration on the cabinet was designed and made by Elizabeth Shewell, née Peckover (1795 - 1871). cabinet: The carcass has shown evidence of shrinkage, the flanks and top are slightly wavy leading to craquelure. some minor losses to the lacquer at the edges, noticeably the rear edge of the top section and just above the two cupboard doors There is a gap progressing at the join between the top and right section of the carcass Minor damage to the lower corner of the left cupboard door, this door isn't shutting without force in its current state, most likely due to the shrinkage of the carcass There is some movement to the brass mount on the right door, all metal mounts look recently cleaned General wear to the decoration to include scratching and knocks, rubbing to the gilt Evidence of historic worm to the lower section Stand: Heavily knocked with losses to the paintwork, gilt sections very rubbed and worn
